Best Biryani in Bombay
Well, there are biryanis and there are biryanis. For Malabari biryani (Mallu Muslim stuff) nothing can beat Hotel Fountain Plaza, which is in a lane next to Handloom House, just off DN Road. (Not to be confused with Fountain Inn, which serves Mangalorean food and isn't far away).
Note: Purists may not find Malabari biryani palatable, because it tastes different. You get chicken, mutton, fish and vegetable versions, and they cost around 40 rupees each (or used to, at least). The vegetable biryani is a contradiction in terms and is avoidable.
If you'd like Kerala-style beef biryani, Public Restaurant is a stone's throw away. It's a bit cramped and the food's greasy — but at Rs 20 a pop, you don't stand to lose much even if the restaurant's having a bad day.
Lucky (at the junction of Hill Road and SV Road, Bandra) is still going strong, but old-timers say the biryani isn't as good as it used to be. I wouldn't know, but I find it pretty good. For Moghlai, there's Shalimar in Mohammed Ali Road and old stalwart Noorani in Haji Ali (with its unusual chicken tikka biryani). Not to forget Delhi Darbar in Grant Road (and also Colaba, I think). Go to the Grant Road branch for the ambience — or lack of it, whichever way you prefer to look at it. I don't like Baghdadi anymore, for some reason.
A new addition to the lineup is "Just Biryanis" at Oshiwara (Andheri West). On the expensive side (there's a unique Mangalorean fish biryani for Rs 150), but it's been written about in the papers lately. Not been there, hence can't vouch for the food. But if all it does are biryanis, the food had better be good!
If Hyderabadi is your thing, there's this joint called "Hyderabad House" next to Seven Bungalows garden (Andheri West, en route to Versova) which claims to serve the real McKid. They tend to skimp on the meat, unfortunately. Try the haleem if you drop in. Of course, this assumes you know there's a bit of Bombay that stretches beyond Haji Ali. ;)

Lucky's biryani is crap...
hey dude,
Either you work in that restaurant or are related to the owner. The biryani (or any other dish) at lucky has more oil than iraq's oil wells. That restaurant is one of those 'cheap oil-cheap ingredients-dirty kitchen-dirtier staff' places that sells biryani for under 100 bucks and that is their speciality.
Everyone knows cooking in lots of oil is a cheat for tasty but very un-healthy food. and Lucky is so un-hygienic (like most muslim restaurants).
You could enjoy those biryanis for "an affordable price" but also be sure to pay your health insurance cuz u gonna need it pretty soon.
Dirty place, dirty service, unhygienic food, basically to-be-avoided by anyone with any concern for quality.

Navi Mumbai Biryani
I have sampled Famous Biryani at Nerul. The Chicken pieces were so tender it just melted into my mouth. The quantity was also just right. It is an extremely crowded place & you may be on the waiting list for several minutes.
Also there is one at Kharghar (Barkat Bhai). Overall it was an enjoyable experience, however the chicken pieces are large but not tender.
Well - I've been looking for
Well - I've been looking for the best Biriyani in Mumbai for a long time. So far, Jafferbhai's Delhi Durbar is tops. I haven't tasted a biriyani better than this anywhere in Mumbai (except for the few times my mom and wife made it at home).
Jafferbhai's Delhi Durbar is now at also at Metro, Dongri and Mahim (only takeaway) besides the old Grant Road place. All of uniform quality. But the guys at the takeaway counter could do well with some training in handling customers. They're quite rude most of the time.
Now - for the worst Biriyanis in town. The Biriyanis served up at Mohd Ali Road during Ramadan month. Never ever order it. A close second would be the outlets at Infiniti Mall and Inorbit mall. None of the biriyanis are technically biriyanis. Just some yellow tasteless rice with the mandatory meat/chicken. Unfortunately, Lucky's at Bandra is also included in this list. I tried once and didn't like it. But everybody and his brother/sister was raving about it. So I decided to give Lucky's another chance at satisfying me. Didn't work. Insipid, with lots of oil, almost like a porridge of oil. Never went there again.
